How to Evaluate a Research Peptide Supplier

Which supplier claims can be checked independently, which cannot, and what the difference tells you.

Documentation you can check, and claims you cannot

Almost every supplier in this category describes its material as high purity and third-party tested. Those phrases are not verifiable — they are assertions about a process the buyer did not observe. What is verifiable is narrower and more useful: whether a certificate exists for the specific lot shipped, whether it names the laboratory that performed the analysis, whether the reported figures are accompanied by the underlying chromatogram, and whether the lot number on the document matches the number on the vial. A supplier making strong claims with no checkable documentation behind them has not given the buyer anything to evaluate. Judge the documentation, not the description of it.

Published certificates and certificates on request

A certificate supplied on request after purchase and a certificate published before purchase are different kinds of evidence. The published version can be read by anyone, compared against other lots of the same compound, and checked for internal consistency without the supplier knowing it is being examined. The on-request version is produced for one buyer, at the point where declining to buy is already inconvenient. Neither arrangement guarantees the analysis is sound. But a supplier that publishes lot records has committed to a document that stays available and can be compared against every subsequent lot, which is a materially harder position to maintain if the underlying testing is not being done.

Lot-specific certificates and representative certificates

A lot-specific certificate reports measurements performed on the batch being sold. A representative or archival certificate reports measurements from a different batch of the same compound, offered as a stand-in on the reasoning that batches of the same product should be similar. The second arrangement is common and is not always disclosed. It can be identified: if the certificate carries no lot number, or carries a lot number that does not appear on the vial, or if the same document is supplied for material purchased months apart, it is not describing the material in hand. Batch-to-batch variation in synthesis is the specific thing a certificate exists to detect, which a representative certificate cannot do by construction.

Verifying that the testing laboratory exists

A certificate that names no laboratory offers no route to verification. A certificate that names one can be checked: the laboratory should be a registered business with a traceable address and a contactable point of record, and in most cases an accreditation that can be looked up independently of anything the supplier says. This is a lower bar than it sounds and a surprising number of certificates in circulation do not clear it. The related question is whether the laboratory is independent of the manufacturer. In-house quality control is legitimate and necessary, but a manufacturer testing its own output is producing a self-report, which is a different category of evidence and should be described as such rather than as third-party testing.

Purity is not sterility, and neither is potency

These three are routinely conflated in supplier copy and they measure entirely different things. Purity describes chemical composition — what fraction of the peptide material present is the target sequence. Sterility describes the absence of viable microorganisms and is established by a different test that most research-grade certificates do not include. Potency describes biological activity and is not measured by either. A compound can report high purity and carry no sterility data at all, and both facts can appear on the same certificate without contradiction. A supplier that uses these terms interchangeably is either unclear on the distinction or relying on the buyer being unclear on it.

What to ask before the first order

Four questions cover most of it. Is a certificate available for the specific lot that will ship, and can it be seen before purchase. Which laboratory performed the analysis, and is that laboratory independent of the manufacturer. Which assays were performed on this lot, given that purity, identity, and endotoxin are separate tests and a lot may carry some and not others. And is the chromatogram available rather than only the computed figure. A supplier able to answer all four in writing has given the buyer something to evaluate. A supplier that answers with reassurance rather than documents has answered a different question.

A certificate reports measurements as of its analysis date and does not expire, but it also does not describe the material after that date. It should be read alongside the manufacture date and the storage conditions the material has since experienced.

Is a certificate of conformity the same as a certificate of analysis?

No. A certificate of analysis reports measured results for a specific batch. A certificate of conformity states that a batch meets a stated requirement without necessarily disclosing the measurements behind that statement.
